RESILIENT

Come, join us to make the children of India RESILIENT!

We have undertaken interventions that help us to build resilience of children facing disasters and climate variabilities.

India is highly exposed to disasters and climate events, at times recurrent and multiple, such as earthquakes, floods, cyclones, landslides and droughts. Urban areas are more exposed to fire hazards than other hydro-geological disasters. Melting snow and glaciers, changing landscape and biodiversity, loss of water bodies and temperature fluctuation not only have an impact on food, health, and potable water but also affects children, their families, and communities, make them prone to further shocks and stresses.

OLD AGE HOME

OLD AGE/NURSING HOMESandnbsp; The origins of community responsibility for the elderly in Cleveland can be traced to the Northwest Territorial law for the relief of the poor, enacted in 1795. This act placed the obligation for maintaining needy relatives upon andquot;father and grandfather, and the mother and grandmother, and the children of every poor, old, blind, lame and impotent person.andquot; During the early 19th century, assistance to Clevelandand#39;s needy, including the aged, continued to come primarily from traditional sourcesandmdash;the family, private benevolence, and public relief (seeandnbsp;PHILANTHROPY,andnbsp;WELFARE/RELIEF). This changed somewhat in 1855, with the establishment of the City Infirmary, which housed and sustained the poor, aged, insane, and handicapped. The first local home to provide particular care for the elderly was not established until 1870, by theandnbsp;LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR. The evidence suggests that a growing dissatisfaction with the City Infirmary impelled religious leaders and social reformers to establish special homes for the aged. Between 1870-1908, 10 such institutions opened in Cleveland. The Home for Aged Women and theandnbsp;ELIZA JENNINGS HOME, both managed by the Womenand#39;s Christian Assn. (later theandnbsp;YOUNG WOMENand#39;S CHRISTIANandnbsp;ASSN.), sheltered elderly women.

HELP POOR PEOPLE

Fortunately, we are living in the age of big data: decisions that used to be made on instinct can now be based on solid evidence. In recent years social scientists have begun to marshal the tools of big data to ask the hard questions about what works and what doesnt. The goal is to turn philanthropy into a science, where money gets directed to programs for which there is strong evidence of their effectiveness. I learned about microloans in 1992, on what was supposed to be a short detour from a career in hedge funds. As a 22-year-old intern in El Salvador for one of the largest microlenders, I was struck by how little the organization knew about their effect on clientsusually womenand the local economy. They knew that many customers were coming back for more loans and saw client retention as proof of their success. Why else would customers keep borrowing if it was not helping? But the microlenders did not have any serious evidence that the loans were helping women get their families out of poverty. When I asked about evidence on impacts, I was directed to a perfunctory questionnaire. I wondered: maybe repeat borrowing is not good if the clients business does not continue to grow. Perhaps true success would be to provide one loan to help someone in need and then down the road to discover the borrower to be stable enough not to need another.
